A Report from Peter Spencer Ltd, Church Organ Builders

Generally the organ is in good condition and clean from soundboard level upwards as the pipework was cleaned following the decorating of the church. There is an issue with the reeds however. Following the pitch change some pipes are soft due to the low point of tuning on the reed tongue. The way around this is to move each pipe down one note, and replace the top note with a new pipe. This will restore the volume and tone of all reed stops. The bottom notes in the Tuba are hooded pipes and these are folding under their own weight. These will be supported and braced to restore the shape of the hood.

We will also fit tuning slides to the Great Twelfth, Fifteenth and Mixture. These are very old pipes and the cone tuning is beginning to affect their speech.

The bellows are showing signs of wear on the corner gussets, and these will be patched to prolong their life another 30 years. The huge amount of dismantling required to remove them for complete re-leathering is not necessary yet, however provisions should be made for this work after 2035. There is also a leak on the Great concussion motor. This will be removed and re-leathered.

There is another wind leak on the Trombone ventil. This has been damaged following mains wiring work within the organ, and is not accessible without major dismantling. The easiest rout into the ventil will be to cut into the side panel behind the left of the organ. We will discuss the best way into this at the time of the work.

The under actions for the Swell and Great are mechanical trackers. The buttons and cloths will be replaced to make the actions quieter and more reliable.

Finally the pneumatic keying system need to be replaced with a processor. This will handle all keying, couplers and piston selections. In switching the action to electro pneumatic we will attend to all top note machines to restore quality of sound and reliability.
